Background

Sezam has been in operation for 17 years and has gone through three stages of development:

  • First Period: Programs dealing with psychosocial support for children affected by the war
  • Second period: Educational programs for teachers, children and teenagers in the area of communication and communication skills
  • The third period: Joint educational programs on non-violence in schools in both entities.

The first period: "Psychosocial support programs for children affected by the events"

In 1995, Sezam was registered as a local organization thanks to the commitment of local people to continue the project of psychosocial support for children threatened by the war in central Bosnia.

  • From 1995-1997, workshops were organized with structured activities in order to strengthen and support refugee children. Six hundred children aged 6-12 years from collective centers joined groups of 20 and participated in various activities to cope with traumatic experiences and to strengthen their self-image during one year.

The second period: "Educational programs for teachers, children and teenagers in the area of communication and communication skills"

Since 1997 Sezam has developed and implemented a number of projects in the field of communication and communication skills. Around 3000 children from Zenica participated in a one-year program for the development of a positive self-image. 600 of them were involved in a program for coping with trauma as well. 160 adolescents in Zenica secondary schools attended a program on the art of growing up.
230 teachers from sixteen primary schools in Zenica have participated in the program on improving communication and communication skills and their application in the classroom.

  • During 1997-1998, Sezam began conducting pedagogical workshops for 300 children from the school "Isidora Sekulić" in Zenica. The workshop included psychosocial support, communication skills and strengthening the positive image of oneself seriously disrupted in the postwar period.
  • In 1998/99, pedagogical workshops for 450 children from the primary schools Musa Ćazim Ćatic in Zenica, were carried out.
    A radio program began broadcasting on a local radio station, Zenith, to promote improvement of communication skills.
  • In 2000, Realization of the following projects:
    • Workshops for 350 children from Primary school "Vladimir Nazor" in Zenica
    • Workshops for 20 teenagers from the General and Catholic High School in Zenica
    • Radio program on radio station "Zenith"
    • Start of workshops for 25 teachers from four primary schools in Zenica.
  • In 2001, Realization of the following projects:
    • Workshops for 450 children from the primary school "Meša Selimović" in Zenica
    • Workshops for 41 teenagers from the General and the Catholic High School
    • Workshops for 50 teachers from six primary schools in Zenica.
  • In 2002, Realization of the following projects:
    • Workshops for 450 children from the primary school "Edhem Mulabdić" in Zenica
    • Workshops for a new group of teenagers, 50 participants from the General and the Catholic High School
    • Workshops for 100 teachers from 12 primary schools in Zenica
    • Support for 6 teachers who participated in a two-year training in nonviolent communication and became workshop leaders for teachers.
  • In 2003, Realization of the following projects:
    • Workshops for 75 teachers from 14 primary schools
    • Workshops for 50 teenagers from the General, Pedagogical and the Catholic High School
    • Workshops for 300 children from three primary schools in Zenica.

The third period "Joint programs on non-violence in schools in both entities"

Driven by the need to contribute to the rehabilitation of deep trust and to build relationships based on respect, Sezam developed and initiated projects in both entities in 2004. 167 teachers and school principals in the region of Tešanj and Teslić have taken part in Sezam's programs.

  • 2004 – 2005 The following projects were implemented:
    • Workshops on nonviolent communication were conducted 72 teachers from two primary schools in the Federation of B&H(PS "Prvi mart" Jelah, PS "Kulin Ban" Tešanjka) and one primary school in the Republic of Srpska of (PS "Dositej Obradović", Blatnica). During the war these schools were divided by the war zone.
    • Workshops for 900 students from these three schools, which were run by the teachers involved in the Sezam workshops
    • Promotion of the book into Bosnian language translation "Nonviolent Communication: A Practical Guide for the independent exercise, exercise group and exercise in the workshop", author Lucy Leu
    • Implementation of a second series of workshops for 72 teachers, including school administrators, in these three schools
  • 2006 – 2008 The following projects were implemented: 
    • "Adoption and application of non-violent communication skills at school and in the community" included 60 teachers from three new schools, "Petar Petrović Njegoš" Teslić, "Ivan fra Frano Jukić" Usora, "Džemal Bijedić" Miljanovci
    • 26 teachers from the three schools lead workshops for 750 students from these schools.
  • 2009 - 2011 The following projects were implemented:
    • Five new schools; "Ivan fra Frano Jukić" Usora, "Vuk Karadžić" Teslić, "Jevrem Stanković" Čečava, "21. mart" Matuzići, "Abdulvehab Ilhamija" Kalošević joined the project "Adoption and application of non-violent communication skills at school and in the community"
    • Previous participants implemented a project called "Women's initiatives in the region of Tešanj - Teslić in school and in the community"
    • Residential training were held in Neum for participants from six project primary schools: "Prvi mart" Jelah,"Kulin Ban" Tešanjka, "Dositej Obradović" Blatnica, "Petar Petrović Njegoš"' Teslić, "Ivan fra Frano Jukić" Usora and "Džemal Bijedić" Miljanovci.
    • Publication of a brochure brochure on Sezam activities with teachers in schools in Tešanj and Teslić,
    • Organization of the first interreligious and intercultural encounters in Herzegovina: Blagaj, Međugorje, Žitomislić.
